Jesy Nelson Opens Up About 'Faking It' During Little Mix Career
Pop sensation Jesy Nelson has made a startling revelation about her time with the globally successful girl group Little Mix, confessing she often felt like she was "faking it" during her tenure with the band. The singer, who rose to fame after winning The X Factor with the group in 2011, disclosed that she remained with Little Mix primarily for one compelling reason: her brother's encouragement to transform her family's financial future.
The Emotional Struggle Behind the Spotlight
In a candid interview on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast, Nelson described the immense pressure she faced while performing with bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall. "I had to show up every day to a music video or an interview and I felt like I was faking it the whole time," she revealed. Despite achieving extraordinary success with 17 UK top 10 hits and numerous sold-out tours, Nelson admitted there were "tough" periods that overshadowed the "amazing days."
The singer's departure from Little Mix in December 2020 was attributed to prolonged mental health struggles that had plagued her for years. Nelson explained that while her mother supported her decision to leave the industry entirely, her brother provided a different perspective that ultimately kept her in the group. "My brother was like - you are so much stronger than you think you are. Just make as much money as you can, you've got a chance to really change your family's life," she recounted.
Family Motivations and Personal Sacrifices
Nelson's commitment to her family has taken on new significance since becoming a mother to twin daughters Ocean Jade and Stacey Monroe, born prematurely in May last year following a high-risk pregnancy. Both children have been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1, a genetic condition that affects motor neurons and typically prevents walking while potentially limiting life expectancy to under two years.
The 34-year-old singer has channeled her experiences into advocacy, announcing a new documentary that campaigns for mandatory SMA testing at birth. "I can now go above and beyond for my girls too, because I worked hard," Nelson stated, reflecting on how her Little Mix earnings have enabled her to provide specialized care for her daughters.
Finding Confidence Through Motherhood
In a surprising twist, Nelson revealed that motherhood has transformed her self-perception in ways she never anticipated. "Since becoming a mum, I feel like I've got my confidence. So weird," she shared. Contrary to common narratives about mothers losing their identity after childbirth, Nelson described experiencing the opposite effect: "I feel like since I've had children, I'm like, the most confident I've ever been. It's like, the most I've ever loved myself. It's just the most powerful I've ever felt."
The singer added that her daughters have become her greatest teachers, stating she doesn't need to instruct them because "they've already taught me so much." This newfound perspective marks a significant evolution from the performer who once felt compelled to pretend happiness while achieving pop stardom with one of Britain's most successful girl groups.
