Jesy Nelson Fears Twins' Anger Over Missed SMA Diagnosis

Jesy Nelson, former Little Mix star, has expressed fears that her twin children Ocean and Story will grow up angry with her because she did not recognize the signs of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA) sooner. The children were diagnosed with the condition, and Nelson is now campaigning for earlier testing in the UK.

Campaign for Newborn Screening

Backed by The Mirror, Nelson continues to advocate for all children in the UK to be tested for SMA at a much younger age. She was left "heartbroken and outraged" by the decision not to offer testing to every child earlier this year, but vowed to "keep on fighting." Currently, only 72% of the country will have access to newborn screening when it is introduced in October.

Documentary Revelations

In her new Prime Video documentary, Jesy Nelson: Life Changing, a tearful Nelson said: "No one should ever have to go through this and it infuriates me that one day I'm going to have to have a conversation with them and say maybe this didn't need to be this way and they're going to have questions for me. I don't know, these are things that I have to battle with every day of like what are they going to ask when I'm older? Are they going to be mad at me that I didn't see the signs sooner and that I could have potentially given them a completely different life?"

She added that she worries people might think she is saying her children cannot live full lives with disabilities, but she is frustrated that a simple test could have prevented the condition. "That wasn't what their life should have been. And I know people keep messaging me, going, 'disabilities don't define children,' and they don't. But I will never, I can't accept that they could have been able to walk and run and live how a child should live," she said. "That's the part that I will never be able to f*****g accept and that is why I'm doing everything that I can to try and change this. Because if I can stop other families from having to go through all of this s**t and hate that we have to go through, then I've done something good out of this horrendous experience."

Call for SMA Inclusion in NHS Blood Test

Nelson has joined forces with The Mirror to raise awareness about SMA and how it can be detected at birth. She wants SMA to be part of an NHS blood test normally carried out at five days old, which currently tests for 10 other conditions. Jesy Nelson: Life Changing will be available on Prime from July 17.
