Jessica Mauboy on That Blackfella Show and Impostor Syndrome

Jessica Mauboy is set to host That Blackfella Show, Australia's first First Nations variety program, airing on ABC TV and ABC iview on 8 July at 9:10 pm. The singer and host opened up about her initial impostor syndrome, her go-to karaoke songs, and a memorable run-in with police who recognised her while issuing a speeding ticket.

Overcoming Impostor Syndrome for a Groundbreaking Show

Mauboy admitted feeling impostor syndrome when offered the hosting role. 'I told Jessica to leave the body and bring Jess back and I said, “Abso-freaking-heck yeah.” I’ve not done anything like this before but it felt very familiar.' She described the show as 'celebrating the oldest living culture in the world – that got me emotional.'

The singer, who has dedicated herself primarily to music, found the experience surprisingly easy. 'Once I was there I was like, oh my gosh, this is a breeze! Why did I put myself through all that?'

Strangest Recognition: A Police Encounter

Mauboy recalled being recognised by police while receiving a speeding ticket. 'I was freaking out, while also going, “Yeah, I’m Jess Mauboy! That’s me!” And they were like, “Oh can I get a photo?” while I’m literally getting out of the car.' Despite the photo, she still received the ticket. 'It taught me a lesson. I’ve never done it again, I keep to the speed!'

Musical Influences and Favourite Artists

Her go-to karaoke songs are Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Love Is a Battlefield, citing the 80s as a favourite era for its 'extra' production. She always returns to Mariah Carey's MTV Unplugged, calling Carey her 'perfect dream diva.'

Mauboy expressed excitement for First Nations musicians Drifting Clouds and Barkaa. She 'fangirled' over Terry Guyula from Drifting Clouds, noting his connection to Yolngu culture and Yothu Yindi. Of Barkaa, she said: 'She’s so intelligent and powerful. She really speaks from who she is and where she’s come from, but she also lifts mob up. I admire that so much because I never really had that.'

Hidden Talents and Stage Mishaps

Mauboy revealed she is secretly good at painting and drawing, primarily using acrylics. She once showed a painting during a 2017 tour but had to build up courage to do so.

Her most chaotic stage moment occurred in 2009 during a ballad performance when her fly was down. 'I was literally baring all. I remember turning around – still singing, by the way – with the mic tucked into my elbow so I could zip myself up.' The audience laughed, and she had to restart the song.

Controversial Pop Culture Opinions

Mauboy expressed dislike for the current sound of hip-hop and rap, describing it as 'slurry' and mumbling. 'Some rappers sound like they’re mumbling in their sleep. I’m not on board with that.' She acknowledged that rap evolves but prefers articulate artists like Kendrick Lamar.

Cringe-Worthy Celebrity Encounter

Her most embarrassing moment was performing a kookaburra call for Ellen DeGeneres on her show in 2013. 'Why did I do a bird call? Out of all the tricks and the singing ability that I have, I chose a bird call to show her? Did I think that was cool?' DeGeneres attempted the call back, which made Mauboy feel better.

Mauboy's The Story of Me tour is heading to Hobart, Brisbane, Canberra, Geelong, and Melbourne later this year.
