Jess Impiazzi's Emotional Pregnancy Journey Amid Lupus and IVF Struggles
In an exclusive interview, reality television star Jess Impiazzi has revealed the profound challenges and joys of her pregnancy journey, marked by a difficult battle with infertility and the autoimmune condition lupus. The 36-year-old actress, best known for her appearances on MTV's Ex on the Beach and Celebrity Big Brother, is expecting her first child, a baby boy, in May with her partner, racing driver Sam Bird, 39.
A 'Miracle' Arrival After Fertility Hurdles
Jess describes the impending birth as a 'miracle', following years of anxiety over her ability to conceive due to lupus. She underwent intensive IVF treatment, a process she openly discussed with Sam from the start of their relationship. "I told Sam from the minute we met that I had problems and would probably have to do IVF," she shares, noting his unwavering support throughout the emotional rollercoaster.
The couple faced a nerve-wracking wait after the IVF procedure, taking a holiday to distract themselves before testing. Upon returning, a faint positive line brought cautious optimism. "We didn't quite believe it, because we'd had such a struggle," Jess recalls. "We were in shock, but it was a happy shock!"
High-Risk Pregnancy and Medical Monitoring
Due to her lupus, Jess's pregnancy has been classified as high-risk, requiring rigorous medical oversight. She explains, "I have to be checked every two weeks because of my lupus. The baby's heartbeat has to be monitored because I'm at risk of this scary thing called fetal heart block due to something called a Ro antibody." This condition affects only about 1% of lupus patients, adding to her stress during the first and second trimesters.
Now at seven months, Jess feels more at ease as she can consistently feel her baby's movements. "I'm calming down now because I can feel him moving all the time," she says. "He's been absolutely fine so far. He's a bit on the smaller side, but that's normal with my condition and the medication I have to take."
Sam Bird's Supportive Role
Jess praises Sam for being her 'absolute rock' throughout the journey. Despite his fear of needles, he stood by her during IVF injections, even booking pregnancy massages and offering foot rubs to ensure her comfort. "He's amazing. He really goes above and beyond," she emphasizes, highlighting the stability she has found in their relationship.
Balancing Motherhood with an Acting Career
Alongside preparing for motherhood, Jess has been advancing her acting career, transitioning from reality TV to roles in independent films and BBC's Strike. Her latest project is the psychological horror-thriller Jitters, where she plays Tiffany Bowman, a character involved in an AI-driven video game mystery. "Everyone's talking about AI at the moment, worried about where it is going," she notes, expressing excitement about blending technology with the horror genre.
Reflecting on the challenges of filming, Jess recounts shooting in an abandoned tube station, which added a creepy atmosphere but required safety precautions. "It was quite hard because the whole crew had to get underground and you've got to be in hard hats," she laughs, admitting her accident-prone nature caused concern.
Overcoming Stereotypes and Looking Ahead
Jess acknowledges the difficulty of being taken seriously after her reality TV background. "I used to get really upset about being underestimated," she admits. However, she has learned to focus on her growth, stating, "People change so much in ten years. Sometimes it feels like you're not allowed to grow, especially as a woman. But now I just think, if someone doesn't take me seriously, fine. I'll just keep going."
For now, her priority is motherhood. "I'm taking some time out," she says. "Growing and raising a child is a job in itself." She plans to return to acting based on her body's needs and opportunities, confident in Sam's support to balance family and career.
Jess Impiazzi's story is a testament to resilience, blending personal triumph with professional ambition as she embraces this new chapter in her life.
