Jennifer Grey's Mother Dies a Week After Cancer Diagnosis

Jennifer Grey, best known for her role as Baby in Dirty Dancing, has announced the death of her mother, Jo Wilder, at the age of 94. Wilder passed away on July 4, just one week after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Jennifer Grey's Emotional Tribute

The 66-year-old actress shared a series of old photographs of her mother on Instagram, accompanied by a heartfelt caption. Grey wrote: 'My mother, Jo Wilder, passed away on July 4th at 94 — by her own choosing, on her own terms, exactly as she lived.' She added: 'A week earlier, she learned she had lung cancer. True to who she was, she chose grace over fear, understanding that leaving this world with dignity is an honor, not a tragedy.'

Grey described her mother as 'gorgeous and talented — a promising young actress on the New York stage in her youth.' She noted that Wilder often said she never fully answered that calling, becoming a mother instead. 'If she'd chosen ambition over my brother and me, we never would have had the mother we had,' Grey wrote.

A Lifelong Activist

Wilder's passions extended beyond family. According to Grey, she was a lifelong activist, 'fiercely attuned to right and wrong.' For years, she ran Wilder Place, a store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, where many discovered her 'extraordinary eye.' Grey concluded her tribute: 'She was brave and deep. I love you, Mom. Thank you for showing me how to do it all, even this, with grace.'

Celebrity Support

Following the post, Grey received an outpouring of support from celebrity friends. Richard E. Grant responded with several love heart emojis. Josh Gad wrote: 'Sending you so much love.' Maggie Wheeler, a friend since school, commented: 'I have been thinking of you so much. I am lucky to have known your beautiful mother through the years of our friendship. She was fierce and kind and curious.' Beth Grant added: 'I love you, Jennifer. What a beautiful share about your beautiful mom.'

Grey's Own Health Journey

In June, Grey shared a post about her own health, revealing she has a history of thyroid cancer and anxiety over dense breast tissue with inconclusive mammograms. She expressed optimism, noting both her parents were still alive at 94, and said she wants to 'do everything I can to stick around — healthy — for as long as possible.'
