Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo Grapple with Baby Ziggy's Television Debut
Former Made In Chelsea personalities Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo have candidly addressed the delicate question of whether their infant son Ziggy will appear in their forthcoming Disney+ documentary series, Raising Chelsea. The couple, who welcomed their first child in December, admitted they find themselves in a "complicated place" regarding this decision, balancing their professional lives with parental privacy concerns.
Privacy Versus Documentation
Throughout their pregnancy journey and Ziggy's birth, which were documented in a three-part series, the couple has meticulously shielded their son's identity on social media. They have exclusively shared photographs showing the back of his head or carefully obscured angles. This protective approach initially extended to their television project, with both parents expressing reluctance about featuring Ziggy prominently.
During an appearance on Jessie and Lennie Ware's Table Manners podcast, Sophie Habboo revealed her original intention was to keep their son completely off both social media and the show. "I never wanted to show, and we haven't shown Ziggy on social media," she confessed. The initial plan was to focus solely on her pregnancy, with no filming beyond the birth itself. "We actually weren't planning on shooting past birth. Like we weren't even going to shoot the birth," she added.
The Social Media Dilemma
Jamie Laing, 37, elaborated on their hesitations, pointing to the unpredictable future of digital platforms. "We're in a complicated place with social media and kids and things like that, because I don't know where social media is going to go," he explained. The reality star expressed concern about potential future resentment from their son. "What happens if they suddenly turn 10 years old, and everyone hates social media and they go, 'Why do you put me on that?'"
Despite these apprehensions, the couple has decided to include limited footage of Ziggy in their series. "We're going to show a little bit, but not really," Jamie clarified. Their decision stems from Jamie's lifelong passion for authentic storytelling and their creative control as producers of the Disney+ project. "We're producers on it, so we were in control," he emphasized, noting this allows them to maintain authenticity while managing their son's exposure.
An Unexpected Birth Recording
The documentary took an unexpected turn during Sophie's delivery, which transformed from a planned natural birth to an emergency cesarean section. Initially, the couple had firmly decided against filming the birth, considering it too "intimate and private." However, their anesthetist spontaneously recorded the procedure without their knowledge, later presenting them with the footage.
Sophie described this healthcare professional as "the most incredible lady ever," who told them they would appreciate having the recording in the future. After viewing the emotional footage the following day, Sophie reconsidered her position. "I think we should put that in because it'll be amazing to see," she ultimately decided.
Jamie reflected on the unique authenticity of this unplanned recording. "What you see in the series is, like, we didn't even know the cameras were there," he said. "That is raw, exactly what was going on in this situation, which is kind of wild. It was a wild, intense, magical moment." He was particularly moved by seeing their genuine emotions during the life-changing event.
Personal Challenges and Reflections
Both parents acknowledged the personal challenges of constant filming during such a vulnerable period. Sophie, 31, admitted that despite her television background, she experienced unprecedented cravings for privacy during pregnancy. "I have never craved privacy more than I did when I was pregnant which was really crazy because then I was filming a TV show," she shared. However, she now expresses gratitude for having documented the experience.
Jamie recalled the terrifying moments during Sophie's emergency C-section at St Mary's Hospital's Lindo Wing. "It was the scariest thing I have ever been through in my entire life," he revealed. "Watching your wife go through that, the person you love, and this baby, and you have no control. It was the most terrifying thing ever. Nothing can prepare you for that."
Sophie echoed these sentiments while emphasizing the positive outcome. "The complications were really scary. Obviously, it wasn't the birth I planned or necessarily wanted, it was scary, but birth is different for every woman and however you do it is incredible and he's here and he's healthy," she stated.
The couple views their Disney+ series as a natural progression from their previous media ventures, having met on television and documented their wedding through podcasting. Jamie described the project as "a sort of level up" in their storytelling journey, driven by his belief in sharing genuine human experiences centered on love and humor.
