James Van Der Beek appears posthumously in Prime Video's new series Elle, a prequel to Legally Blonde, playing school district superintendent Dean Wilson. The actor, who died in February 2026 at age 48 from colorectal cancer, makes his first appearance in Episode 3.
Touch of Tribute
At the end of Episode 3, just before the credits, a title card reads: "In loving memory of James Van Der Beek." Fans have reacted emotionally, with one viewer saying: "I was completely taken by surprise seeing him on my screen." Another confessed: "I cried when I saw him."
Series Premise
Elle is set in 1995, following Elle Woods' school days before the events of the original film. Lexi Minetree stars as the young Elle, taking over the role made famous by Reese Witherspoon. The eight-episode first season is now streaming on Prime Video.
Future Seasons
Production has already begun on a second season, expected to arrive in 2027. According to the show's creators, the series aims to explore Elle's formative years and the origins of her iconic personality.
