"My other half is obsessed now with Greggs bacon sandwiches," he explained. "We now have to stop everywhere to get a Greggs bacon sandwich—but I went, 'I can't go in and get a Greggs!'"
Martin, 53, expressed concern that being photographed queuing at the popular bakery chain would lead to unwanted media attention. "Any celebrity queuing up in the nation's favourite bakery would inevitably be photographed and end up in all the papers the next day," he pointed out.
Taste-Test Showdown and Personal Preferences
Despite his reluctance to be seen endorsing a high street bakery, Martin indulged Kim's passion by conducting a bacon sandwich taste-test at various outlets. The couple visited several popular chains but failed to agree on a winner.
"I said Pret won because it was properly buttered," Martin recalled. "But she's like, no, Greggs is hers, because the bacon was a little bit sweaty. She likes sweaty bacon, but anyway. She does make the best bacon sandwiches in the world, but she's just the taste tester, and so Greggs it is."

Martin has been dating 39-year-old Kim Johnson for just over two years. In a significant personal shift, he proposed at the end of last year, despite previously vowing never to marry. This engagement marks a notable turnaround for Martin, who stated in 2019: "Marriage doesn't interest me in the slightest, mainly because I've catered for so many weddings, really. Martin's path to culinary stardom wasn't straightforward. He left school without qualifications, struggling with dyslexia. "I left school with no qualifications," he told podcaster Mark Wogan. "I'm not proud of it but I used to hate Wednesdays. Wednesday was a spelling test. I'd be in tears on a Wednesday night, I'd have 20,000 words to write because I knew that I would get every single one of them wrong."
He added: "[I was a] massive dyslexic, never read a book in my life apart from I think Peter and Jane level B2 was probably the last one I read when I was at primary school. I just longed to be cooking and so hand in hand with being at school, I worked every weekend."
Professional Journey and Television Career
After school, Martin undertook work experience in London before training as a chef at Hostellerie de Plaisance in Saint-Émilion, France. He later worked at the three-Michelin-star restaurant Maison Troisgros in Roanne.
Returning to England, he served as a pastry chef at the Chewton Glen Hotel before becoming head chef at Hotel du Vin at age 22. His television career began with appearances on Ready Steady Cook and The Big Breakfast, eventually leading to his own show, James Martin: Yorkshire's Finest.
