Jack Davenport has revealed he would consider sending his three-year-old son Harry to the Dragon School in Oxford, but only as a day pupil. The actor, known for roles in This Life and Pirates of the Caribbean, said the school is now 'crazily expensive' and he would not want his child 'hanging out with a load of rich kids'.
Davenport, who attended the Dragon as a boarder after his parents divorced when he was seven, admitted that the experience was positive for him. However, he acknowledged the emotional impact, recalling a visit to the school years later: 'I'd never seen a squadron of eight year olds – I was like, fuck, they're tiny! My heart slightly broke for myself because I realised I was really young.'
Becoming a father to Harry with his wife, actor Michelle Gomez, has been an 'enormous shift'. Davenport quoted a saying about parenthood: 'The day before your child is born, everything is like it was, and the day after they're born, your heart is wandering around in the world outside your body and it's terrifying.' He added that it's also wonderful.
The actor also spoke fondly of his maternal grandmother, Penelope, who cared for him when his parents were working. Despite her privileged background, she volunteered in an Aids ward, holding patients' hands. Davenport said, 'I still miss her.'
