ITV has faced backlash from viewers over its coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following an embarrassing blunder by American presenter Semra Hunter. The tournament, which kicked off on June 11 and runs until July 19, 2026, is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico for the first time. Matches are being played across 16 host cities, with 48 teams competing in 104 matches over 39 days.
During Mexico's 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match, Hunter made a cringeworthy mistake during the post-match program. ITV aired footage of Sweden manager Graham Potter wearing a cowboy hat in training, but Hunter referred to him as 'Gareth Southgate,' the former England manager. The gaffe quickly went viral on social media, with many viewers criticizing the broadcaster's choice of presenters.
One viewer wrote: 'Gareth Southgate? ITV is this really the best you can do??' Another commented: 'I thought I misheard this live! Haha... now I know I'm not going mad. Embarrassing!' A third added: 'It's Graham Potter you idiots.' Many viewers claimed the American presenters lacked knowledge of football, with one stating: 'Ticking boxes and using Americans who haven't got a clue!' Another said: 'What could possibly go wrong when you employ football presenters who know nothing about football?'
Some viewers defended the hosts, suggesting the error may have been due to behind-the-scenes script issues. ITV has been contacted for comment. The next fixture, Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, airs tonight on BBC One at 8pm BST. England's opening match against Croatia will be broadcast live on ITV1 on June 17 at 9pm BST.
