Irish political leaders have expressed shock and heartbreak at the sudden death of musician and actor Glen Hansard, hailing his 'significant contribution' to the country’s cultural landscape.
Taoiseach and Tánaiste lead tributes
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was deeply saddened to learn of Mr Hansard’s passing. He described a 'talented musician and actor who made a significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape over many years'. 'My sincere sympathies to his family, friends, and fans,' the Taoiseach added.
Tánaiste Simon Harris expressed his condolences on the passing of the award-winning Irish singer-songwriter and musician who became an international success. 'As well as being the long-serving frontman and founder of the influential Irish rock band The Frames, Hansard starred in the Bafta-winning film, The Commitments, which has gone down in Irish film and music folklore, and the Irish-made drama Once, which earned him a number of major honours, including an Academy Award with his co-star Marketa Irglova,' he said. 'I send my thoughts to his wife and their young son, all his family and friends as well as all those that knew him.'
Minister for Culture and Sinn Féin president pay tribute
Minister for Culture Patrick O’Donovan said few artists made as big an impact on modern Irish storytelling as Hansard from his early days busking on the streets of Dublin to The Commitments and founding The Frames. 'His impact will last generations in Irish music, even as his life has ended far too soon,' he said.
Sinn Féin president Mary-Lou McDonald said a 'sublime talent' and one of Ireland’s most significant singer song writers has been lost. 'It is heartbreaking,' she said. 'A proud son of Ballymun. Frontman of The Frames. Gifted solo artist. Oscar Winner. Passionate supporter of Ireland’s busking scene. Champion of the homeless. Glen left an unforgettable mark on the Irish music scene. He was gifted, poetic, connected and he really cared. Glen will be missed so deeply. His legacy will be treasured. My thoughts are with Maire and their young son, Glen’s family and wide circle of friends, his fans and all who loved this wonderful man and artist.'
