Demi Moore has stunned fans with her unrecognisable appearance in her latest film, The Substance, which is generating significant Oscars buzz. The 61-year-old actress underwent a drastic transformation using prosthetics to portray an aging character, leaving audiences horrified and impressed in equal measure.
The film, described as a modern-day The Picture of Dorian Gray, follows Elisabeth Sparkle, an ageing actress who discovers a chemical that allows her to experience life as a younger version of herself. Over the course of the movie, Moore's character ages dramatically, with the prosthetics making her almost impossible to recognise. Released last month, The Substance has been hailed as a career-defining moment for the Ghost star, with many predicting a Best Actress Oscar win at the 2025 ceremony.
Speaking about her role, Moore told The Independent: “It’s not a glamour role. I knew going in that I had to be vulnerable and raw.” She added that she found parts of herself in the character, saying, “I’m not Elisabeth, but I could find pieces of her that connected with me.” In an interview with The Guardian, she reflected on the film's themes, stating: “What really struck me was the harsh violence against oneself... It’s not what’s being done to you, it’s what we do to ourselves.” She also discussed the broader issues of self-judgment and the pressures of Hollywood.
Moore, who began her career in the 1980s with standout roles in Ghost and Striptease, has experienced a career resurgence after a quieter period. She starred in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and produced the Austin Powers series in the 2000s. More recently, she impressed television audiences with her performance in Ryan Murphy's Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and now The Substance has cemented her comeback. Variety praised the film in September, calling it “a dark exploration of youth, beauty and the relentless demands on women in Hollywood.”
