Heather Rhodes, a cleaning influencer on TikTok, demonstrated to her 73,000 followers how to make a dust repellent spray using three common household ingredients.
In a video, she poured two cups of water (475ml) into a spray bottle, then added a quarter cup of vinegar (59ml), a tablespoon of olive oil, and a drop of washing up liquid. She then applied the mixture to a microfibre cloth for cleaning.
"It cleans and repels the dust away," Heather said. "Repeat monthly for a dust-free home."
User Reactions and Additional Tips
Viewers shared positive experiences. One wrote: "Been using this for many years, way before TikTok. It is a once a month use, therefore, no build up." Another said: "This helps the dust levels in our house with one dog/two cats." A third added: "Thanks for sharing this hack. I dust and it lasts for a day. I started using this! And it works! I used it on my leather furniture, gone for two weeks, no dust when I got home! A miracle!"
Addressing sceptics, Heather clarified: "No, it doesn't take away the dust [forever], dust is inevitable, BUT it prevents the dust from sticking to your surfaces making to fall to the ground for easy vacuuming." She also noted the solution repels dust from furniture.
The advice is backed by Apartment Therapy, whose writer reported that her grandmother uses vinegar, olive oil, and a small amount of soap to prevent dust accumulation. The writer explained: "The coating that the spray leaves on surfaces helps prevent dust from adhering and settling in, which means you'll have to clean those hard-to-dust places a little less frequently."
