James Van Der Beek, best known for his role in Dawson's Creek, has died at the age of 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer, which he made public in 2024. His family announced his passing on Instagram, prompting an outpouring of grief from fellow actors and industry figures.
Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote: 'I'm so sad for your beautiful family. While James' legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world. F*ck Cancer.' Chad Michael Murray added: 'James was a giant. His words, art and humanity inspired all of us.'
Julie Plec, who worked with Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson, said: 'A vibrant young man. A father and husband and friend. A generational icon. RIP JVDB. Sleep now, Dawson.' Paul Walter Hauser raised more than $14,000 via Cameo to help with Van Der Beek's treatment, writing: 'Love you, James. I know you're in Heaven being pampered with love.'
Fox Entertainment, which worked with Van Der Beek on the cancer awareness special The Real Full Monty, said: 'He chose to share his story with remarkable courage and generosity, using his voice to raise awareness around cancer screening.' Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, which produced his final projects Overcompensating and the upcoming Elle, also paid tribute.
Other tributes came from Jennifer Garner, Jenna Dewan, Kellan Lutz, Eric Stonestreet, and his former Dancing with the Stars partner Emma Slater, who said: 'I'm so devastated. He is and will always be family to me.'
