Laura Sadler, best known for playing nurse Sandy Harper on BBC's Holby City, died at the age of 22 after falling from a second-floor balcony in London. The actress, who had also starred in Grange Hill, suffered a 40-foot fall on June 15, 2003, and never regained consciousness. Her family made the difficult decision to turn off her life support machine on June 18, and she passed away the following day at Charing Cross Hospital.
Rising Star Cut Short
Sadler first rose to fame playing Judi Jeffreys on the enduring BBC children's series Grange Hill in 1997. Her character's death in the show, slipping and falling from a burning building, eerily foreshadowed her own fate. Before that, she trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, where her talent caught the attention of Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman after he saw her perform in a production and requested a meeting.
After Grange Hill, Sadler took on the role of Skirty Marm in the BBC children's comedy Belfry Witches. She also appeared alongside Julie Walters in the 1996 film Intimate Relations, playing a young girl who develops feelings for her mother's unfaithful partner.
Holby City Success and Tragic Accident
Sadler joined Holby City as nurse Sandy Harper, a role she played for three years before her death. The accident occurred at the London flat of her boyfriend and co-star George Cavill in the prestigious Holland Park district. Her death was ruled a tragic accident.
Mal Young, then Controller of Drama Series at the BBC, said: "Everyone at Holby City, and indeed, across the BBC, are devastated by this news. Laura was a much loved, talented and respected actress. She brought so much to the role with her infectious enthusiasm, dedication and 100% professionalism. Television has lost a talent who had so much more to give. We, and her many fans will miss her greatly."
Lorraine Heggessey, then Controller of BBC ONE, added: "I'm devastated that we have lost such a talented young actress. When I first met Laura on Grange Hill it was clear she had enormous potential. She was a sweet, modest, hard-working girl and will be much missed."
Tributes from Colleagues and Family's Wishes
Sadler's agent, Michele Milburn, said: "It is difficult to express how great a loss this is for Laura's family and friends. She was loved by everyone for her kindness and generosity of spirit. She had a unique talent, and I am certain was only at the start of what would have been a brilliant career. However, her greatest gift was her ability to bring out the best in all who were lucky enough to know her."
Sadler's mother, Sonja, was adamant that the remaining eight episodes featuring her daughter should be broadcast. BBC scriptwriters worked with her to create a storyline explaining Sandy's departure. In the final episode, it was revealed that Sandy had won £150,000 on the lottery and left for Australia to pursue her former flame, Danny Shaughnessy. Before leaving, she gave money to colleagues, who raised a toast to "the one and only Sandy."
