Heritage Open Days are set to return from September 11 to 20, 2026, offering thousands of free events and experiences across England. The festival, organized by the National Trust and supported by Postcode Lottery players, features a programme delivered locally by thousands of organizations and volunteers.
Free Access to Historic Sites
Visitors can explore a variety of locations for free, including cold war bunkers, lighthouses, canal boats, and collieries. In previous years, Merseyside locations such as Wavertree's Lock-Up, Hesketh Park Observatory, and the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth have participated. Organisers have yet to confirm which Merseyside locations will take part in 2026.
Everyday Histories Theme
This year's theme is 'Everyday Histories,' focusing on the stories of ordinary people often missing from history books. Liam Montgomery, Marketing and Projects Manager for Heritage Open Days, said: “There are so many brilliant stories that are celebrated through the festival each year, but this year I can’t wait to see all those everyday hidden-in-plain-sight stories centre stage in our programming through the ‘Everyday Histories’ theme. I’m so excited to see our community uncover new stories and delve deeper than ever before.”
Volunteer and Organiser Support
Founded in 1994, Heritage Open Days had over 2,500 organisers and 44,200 volunteers across 5,879 events last year. Laura Chow, Head of Charities at Postcode Lottery, said: “It is fantastic that Postcode Lottery players have been supporting Heritage Open Days for 14 years, allowing millions of people to explore England’s rich heritage for free. This year’s theme of ‘Everyday Histories’ shines a light on the workers who helped shape the country we today and are often missing from history books. Through an exciting programme of special events, experiences and activities, visitors will have the chance to discover more about these unsung heroes and their extraordinary lives!”
