Call The Midwife star Helen George has opened up about the tragic death of her secret boyfriend, who died from leukaemia shortly after their relationship began. The 42-year-old actress, known for playing Nurse Trixie, shared the heartbreaking story on the Mystic Mates podcast.
Diagnosis and Filming in the Bahamas
Helen revealed that she had been dating a man secretly when he was suddenly diagnosed with leukaemia. The diagnosis was serious from the start, and he knew the gravity of his condition. The very next day, Helen had to fly to the Bahamas to film the ITV show Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters, which premiered last July. She recalled: "I would call my best friend and sob down the phone about this lovely, beautiful man."
Clairvoyancy Readings and Afterlife Beliefs
The tragedy has led Helen to believe that those who have died continue to exist in some form, watching over the living. She explained: "He now comes through in my clairvoyancy readings – he's looking after me. I'd like to be a clairvoyant. I'd like to talk to dead people." She described a recent reading where a clairvoyant told her: "This is your ex boyfriend, and he died very suddenly after you started dating him. He's come into the room because he's not very happy about your situation." Helen added: "I cried because it was wonderful to think this person, whom I didn't really know for that long, was there. He was angry that he'd left me looking for someone else and then finding someone else who wasn't suitable."
Recent Split from Dan Innes
This year, Helen split from businessman Dan Innes just months after he moved into her West London home. A source shared: "Helen and Dan have gone their separate ways. They had a whirlwind romance but their differences became apparent. It has been a difficult time for them both." Following the split, Helen shared quotes hinting at feeling "disrespected," including: "I absolutely take responsibility for when I am wrong. But I will never apologise for responding to disrespect. If you lit the match, do not stand in the flames pretending to be the victim." Another repost read: "I don't want my daughter to be like me. I want her to speak up sooner. Walk away faster. Trust herself deeper. Apologise less. Take up more space. Ask bigger questions. Dream louder. And if that means she becomes everything I wasn't good."
Previous Relationships
Helen had also been romantically linked to her Call The Midwife co-star Olly Rix, who played her on-screen husband, prior to her romance with Dan. She was previously in a seven-year relationship with Jack Ashton, with whom she shares two young daughters.
