Harvard University has awarded honorary degrees to five distinguished individuals, including comedian and television host Conan O'Brien, who served as the guest speaker at this year's commencement ceremony.
Honorees Recognized for Outstanding Contributions
The five honorees, three men and two women, were celebrated for their exceptional achievements across various fields. They include:
- Geoffrey Hinton, known as the "Godfather of AI" and a Nobel Prize winner in Physics, for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence.
- Sir Noel Malcolm, a historian and political journalist with deep expertise in European history.
- Audra McDonald, a Tony Award-winning singer and actor celebrated for her Broadway performances.
- Peggy Noonan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the Wall Street Journal.
- Conan O'Brien, the comedian, writer, and producer known for his late-night talk shows.
O'Brien's Role at Commencement
Conan O'Brien delivered the commencement address, bringing his signature humour to the ceremony. His speech was well-received by graduates and attendees, though some graduate students staged a picket outside the event.
The honorary degrees were conferred during Harvard's annual commencement exercises, a tradition that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society.
