Warner Bros Discovery is reportedly planning to reboot the Harry Potter film franchise within the next three to five years, according to a leak from known industry insider WDW Pro. The leak suggests the studio is considering recasting the iconic roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, marking a fresh start for the core series.
The news comes as Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav has emphasised the profitability of the original Harry Potter films, which grossed nearly $10 billion worldwide. However, the Fantastic Beasts prequel series has underperformed, leading the studio to seek ways to revitalise the Wizarding World brand.
Speaking on the Valliant Renegade channel, WDW Pro stated: “It now seems extremely likely that the Harry Potter universe… is receiving a reboot in the future in terms of the movies. And that may also include recasting some of the roles that have become iconic.” The leaker clarified that the reboot would focus on “core Harry Potter” rather than ancillary spin-offs.
Valliant Renegade added: “You’re looking at that original cast: Harry, Hermione, Ron. New cast. Starting over.” However, WDW Pro noted that the reboot might not follow a standard formula, and the studio has not yet appointed a creative lead akin to James Gunn at DC Studios.
The decision to reboot is driven by a belief that the original fanbase is “aging out,” according to Valliant Renegade, who said: “They want to revitalise or refresh this, or make something new to drive new audiences to theaters.” The leaker also described the core Harry Potter franchise as “dormant,” with secondary projects failing to sustain momentum.
