England secured a 3-2 victory over Mexico in a friendly at the Azteca Stadium, but the match was also filled with humorous off-camera moments that delighted fans. Starting with the viral Harry Kane interview, here are six funny moments from the game.
Harry Kane... or Bert?
Poor Harry Kane. The England captain put his heart and soul into his 90-minute display, battling up front as a lone target man and scoring from the penalty spot. Yet, he still became the butt of jokes. After singing and celebrating with the travelling support, his voice turned hoarse. Nobody was prepared for how high-pitched Kane's first words were when interviewed by presenter Kelly Somers. One crafty fan used the audio to mask him behind an animation of Bert from Sesame Street, with the video surpassing 1.1 million views on X.
Crouch LOVES Kane
Staying on Kane, who knew the Bayern Munich star was such close friends with Peter Crouch? Apparently no one. They have much in common: a respectable strike rate for England, a long-lasting Premier League legacy, and a Tottenham connection. There was a hint of bromance as Crouch and Kane locked arms and hugged vigorously for 10 seconds.
Bellingham's sicknote speech
Jude Bellingham for prime minister? The midfielder not only scored a brilliant brace to inspire victory but also gave the best response when asked about fans calling in sick to work. Bellingham said: "Have another shot and text your bosses to say you're not coming in tomorrow. That's about it. My god, if you can't enjoy a night like this, just for one night, then I don't know what it's worth." Footballers are often told to "stick to football," but maybe Bellingham is the people's champion.
Gordon's X-rated greeting
As Anthony Gordon hovered near Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre on the touchline, he likely expected to pick up Spanish phrases after learning the language before moving to Barcelona. Instead, Aguirre called him over, insulted him in English, and laughed. Broadcast cameras caught Aguirre looking at Gordon and saying "F*** you" before laughing. Gordon laughed it off. Given how Aguirre threatened to boil over on the touchline, perhaps he should not return the favour.
Bentley in the crowd
Has anyone checked on David Bentley? The ex-footballer, now 41, was in the crowd at the Azteca, and some Mexican fans were unhappy. The former Tottenham midfielder turned his phone camera to a man in a Mexico shirt who appeared to aim a horrific neck-slit gesture, mouthing "you're going to die here" and repeating "dead, dead." Another fan did the same. Bentley seemed amused, grinning and pulling a middle finger gesture in response. Let's hope he made it out safely.
Rooney joins in Wonderwall
Once upon a time, Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart, and Micah Richards played in the same England team. Don't be surprised there's still brotherly love after they reunited in the BBC punditry studio. As Oasis hit Wonderwall reverberated around the Azteca after the 3-2 win, Hart and Richards linked arms, mimed lyrics, and swayed. Richards egged on Rooney to join, and the Manchester United legend obliged. Hart then produced his best Noel Gallagher impression singing "because maybe..." while Rooney looked uncomfortable. Get them a TV show, we say.
