Former Strictly Contestant Expresses Interest in Hosting Role
Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, a former contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, has openly discussed his potential interest in stepping into Claudia Winkleman's shoes as a presenter on the beloved BBC dance show. The athlete, known for his roles as an Olympian and a Gladiator, revealed his thoughts in a recent interview, sparking speculation about the future of the program's hosting lineup.
Replacing a Television Icon
Last year, Claudia Winkleman and co-host Tess Daly announced their departure from Strictly Come Dancing, sending shockwaves through the fan community. Since then, numerous names have been floated as potential replacements, including Zoe Ball, Bradley Walsh, and Angela Scanlon. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey has now added his name to that list, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity.
"I'm all good for a laugh or two, I don't think I could be taken too seriously," Harry said. "Maybe put me in the Claudiatorium, we'd have to still call it that. I'll be a good cheerleader." His lighthearted approach suggests he would bring a fresh, energetic dynamic to the role, though he acknowledges the challenge of following in Winkleman's footsteps.
A Journey from the Dance Floor to the Spotlight
Harry, who competed in the most recent series of Strictly Come Dancing and finished in sixth place with professional partner Karen Hauer, admitted he initially underestimated the show's immense popularity. "I still didn't appreciate the sort of magnitude of what Strictly was," he confessed. "It's spoken about every day, but being on the tour has been quite an eye-opener."
He described fans waiting outside hotels and attending multiple shows, noting how the experience has deepened his appreciation for the program's cultural impact. Despite not being a professional dancer, Harry embraced the challenge, stating, "I gave it my all. And I think I was in a position where I've learned a lot." His participation in the arena tour has further solidified his connection to the Strictly community.
Nerves and Vulnerability on the Dance Floor
Interestingly, Harry found training for Strictly Come Dancing more nerve-racking than his athletic pursuits, including sprinting in the Olympics and performing as a Gladiator. "I think training for Strictly was more nerve-racking because I felt vulnerable," he admitted. "There's a vulnerability about it, knowing you're not a professional dancer, you're not actually very good, to try and learn something over the course of three or four days, then to perform it in front of millions of people at home."
He contrasted this with the pressure of sprinting, where expectations to "do well" can be more intense. However, Harry emphasized his ability to find the silver lining in every experience, showcasing a resilient and positive mindset.
Life Beyond Strictly: Gladiators and Family Moments
Harry's career took a dramatic turn in 2023 when he was revealed as a Gladiator in the BBC reboot of the classic series. He never anticipated the show would reach such heights, with millions tuning in weekly. "I didn't realise the magnitude of what it would mean to people," he said. "We enter a home on a Saturday night, and we're babysitters for an hour. Families bond over us; they have the opportunity to talk about things they don't normally talk about."
This role has allowed him to share special moments with his five-year-old daughter, Aubreé-Isla, who cheerfully supports him both on and off screen. "Being able to share those moments with my own daughter is so special to me," Harry gushed. His daughter even joins autograph queues to meet him, demonstrating her understanding of his public persona.
Upcoming Soccer Aid Debut and Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Harry is set to make his debut in Soccer Aid for UNICEF at the London Stadium, an event he describes as "awesome" and an honor. "I'm absolutely buzzing," he said, highlighting the cause's importance in providing education and medical treatment for children worldwide.
He joked about his fitness for the football match, noting that running for 90 minutes differs significantly from his sprinting background. Harry also shared his ideal teammate would be Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, while expressing reluctance to face defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
As speculation about the Strictly Come Dancing hosting role continues, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey remains a compelling candidate, blending humor, experience, and a genuine connection to the show's audience. Whether he ultimately steps into the Claudiatorium or not, his journey from athlete to entertainer continues to captivate fans.
