Guillermo Ochoa Retires After England World Cup Win

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa announced his immediate retirement from football following Mexico's 3-2 defeat to England in the World Cup round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium. The 40-year-old, who turns 41 on July 13, had stated before the tournament that he would retire after Mexico's final match. He was seen fighting back tears on the bench and was hoisted into the air by teammates after the game as he bid farewell alongside his family.

Emotional Farewell at the Azteca

Ochoa told reporters: “My first game, Azteca. My last game, Azteca. It’s been a beautiful final chapter of my career. Thank you, everyone.” He earned 153 caps for Mexico, with 12 appearances at World Cup finals across six tournaments dating back to 2006. His professional career spanned 23 years, including two spells at Club America, where he made over 425 appearances, and stints in Europe with AC Ajaccio, Malaga, Granada, Standard Liege, Salernitana, AVS, and AEL Limassol.

England's Heroic Victory

England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, secured a stunning 3-2 win despite being reduced to 10 men for most of the second half. Jude Bellingham scored a quick-fire double in the first half, and Harry Kane added a penalty in the 60th minute. Mexico's goals came from Julian Quinones in the 42nd minute and Raul Jimenez from the penalty spot. Jarell Quansah received a straight red card for England. Mexico applied late pressure but could not find an equalizer, condemning them to only their third defeat in 90 games at the Azteca and their first-ever World Cup loss at the venue.

Ochoa's Legacy

Ochoa lost his starting spot during the tournament to Raul Rangel but remained in the squad as a mentor. He made a farewell appearance in the final group-stage match against Czechia, coming off the bench in the 77th minute as Mexico won 3-0. His retirement marks the end of an illustrious career that made him a Mexican football icon. England will face Norway in the quarter-finals after Norway beat Brazil 2-1 with a double from Erling Haaland.
