A young bride in Limerick has been left devastated after her groom was killed in a car crash just hours before their wedding. Kate Quilligan and Miley Harty were due to marry at St Munchin’s Church on Saturday, but the 20-year-old died in an early morning collision.
In a heartbreaking tribute, Ms Quilligan, along with family and friends, released balloons outside the church in his honour. She said: 'We all should be celebrating the best day of our life at that church but instead it’s the worst.'
The crash occurred on the R518 at Cragmore, Askeaton, around 1am on Saturday. Mr Harty was a front-seat passenger and died instantly. The 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene, and a back-seat passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Ms Quilligan had posted a final photograph of the couple on social media, writing: 'Baby this our last pic we had together but it won’t be our last I promise you that. Me and you together forever no matter what.' She added: 'I love you forever my brownie. It will always be me and you no matter what.'
Local priest Fr Sean O’Longaigh expressed the community's sadness: 'He was to get married today. So the family are going to be attending a funeral instead of a wedding.' Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage from the area.
