Forty years after its release, Richard Donner's adventure film 'The Goonies' remains a cult classic, but recent unhinged rants from cast members have worried fans. The film, which became a box office hit in 1985, followed the adventures of Mikey, Data, Chunk and Mouth as they tried to save their homes in Astoria, Oregon.
Steven Spielberg is rumoured to have conceived the idea while wondering what children did on rainy days, leading to a tale of daring exploits involving a criminal family and a hidden shipwreck. Warner Bros announced a sequel earlier this year, but the legacy has been overshadowed by erratic behaviour from some stars.
During filming, the cast experienced chaos and pranks. Sean Astin, who played Mikey, recalled messing up lines in his audition, but Spielberg reassured him he had the job before he spoke. Kerri Green, who played Andy, remembered a prank where director Donner hid her shoes during an improvisation.
Joe Pantoliano, who played Francis Fratelli, described a combative relationship with co-star Robert Davi, which they used in auditions to one-up each other. The shoot, originally scheduled for three months, extended to five due to the chaotic, improvisational style.
Despite the fun, fans have expressed concern over recent outbursts from Corey Feldman and others, which have drawn attention away from the film's enduring message of friendship. The cast remember the family-like atmosphere, but the unhinged rants have cast a shadow over the film's legacy.
