Dave Bautista is reportedly the top candidate to take over the role of Kratos in Amazon's God of War TV series, following Ryan Hurst's injury-induced departure. Hurst, who was initially cast as the Spartan warrior, tore his bicep during a stunt, requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery that the production cannot accommodate.
Injury Forces Recasting
According to Deadline, the show was deep into production when Hurst injured his bicep. The injury, described as a torn bicep, necessitated surgery and a prolonged recovery period. With the child actor Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, aging quickly, the production team cannot afford to wait for Hurst to heal.
Amazon is now looking for an actor who can step into the role immediately, and Bautista's current physique from filming the upcoming Highlander movie makes him a strong fit. Bautista, known for roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune, has reportedly bulked up significantly for the fantasy project, which aligns perfectly with Kratos's iconic build.
Production Timeline and Cast
Hurst had reportedly spent months training and dieting to achieve the necessary size for Kratos. With four months of production lost due to his injury, Amazon needs someone who already looks the part. The series is expected to closely follow the 2018 God of War game and its sequel Ragnarok, with two seasons being filmed back to back.
If Bautista lands the role, he will join a cast that includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Mandy Parker as Odin, and Sonya Walger as Freya. The show is targeting a 2027 release, though this recasting could potentially push that date back.
