It wasn't the athletes, the musical performances or even the arrival of King Charles in the Tardis that stole the show for some Commonwealth Games viewers - it was a giant flying Tunnock's Teacake.
The iconic Scottish biscuit took centre stage during the closing moments of Thursday night's (July 23) opening ceremony at the Hydro in Glasgow. The treat soared into the air as fireworks burst from beneath it while Nathan Evans and Saint Phnx performed their song Home.
Viral Sensation
The finale has since gone viral on social media, with one TikTok alone racking up more than 200,000 views as fans couldn't get enough of the oversized teacake.
Food influencer Sarah, who posts under the username @foodngems, shared a video on TikTok of the moment the enormous prop blasted into the air. Her own reaction was just as entertaining as the teacake itself. As fireworks erupted from underneath the giant teacake, Sarah could be heard shouting: "Oh my God, what the hell," before bursting into laughter.
Captioning the clip, she wrote: "Love you Scotland and Tunnocks. Great time at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow." The comment section was soon filled with users joking that they wanted one of their own.
Public Reaction
One person wrote: "Is that a limited edition or can it be ordered online? Asking for a friend." While another wanted that exact teacake for themselves, adding: "I need that Tunnock's prop in my home ASAP."
A third user, made a joke referring to the Duke of Wellington, as they said: "I'm disappointed that the tea cake didn't have a road cone on top. Come on Scotland, you had one job."
Meanwhile, another viewer said: "It's the girl recording this laughing her head off who's made this for me." Others even joked that someone should let actor David Tennant know about the giant teacake, referencing the Scot star's well known love of the iconic treat.
David Tennant's Love for Tunnock's
The former Doctor Who actor has joked that he should be Tunnock's official brand ambassador. Previously appearing on LADbible's Snack Wars, Tennant questioned why he hadn't landed the role, saying: "Who is the brand ambassador for Tunnock's? And why isn't it me?" He even joked he'd be "raging" if fellow Scots Ewan McGregor or James McAvoy had beaten him to the job.

While the giant teacake may have surprised viewers this year, it wasn't the first time Tunnock's has played a role at a Glasgow Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. Back in 2014, one of the night's most memorable moments saw dozens of performers dressed as giant Tunnock's Teacakes take to the stage at Celtic Park. Wearing silver and red cardboard costumes inspired by the famous packaging, the dancers became one of the defining images of the ceremony.
