Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez have been house-hunting in Spain, but their Lost in Translation podcast took a dramatic turn when a Spanish language lesson went off the rails. The former Strictly pro encouraged Gemma to take things slowly and proposed they bring their children, Mia and Thiago, on several more visits before making a hasty decision.
Gemma has been putting significant effort into mastering the language, but her most recent Spanish tutorial went spectacularly wrong as Gorka attempted to teach her some of his homeland's distinctive idioms. On their podcast, Gemma grappled with phrases such as "throw the house out of the window," which translates roughly to "hang the expense," and "having no hairs on the tongue," referring to someone plain-speaking.
Tener Males Plugs Causes Conflict
The duo particularly wrestled with the Spanish expression "Tener males plugs." Translating literally to "Having bad fleas," it signifies a person with a bad temper or prickly nature. Gemma immediately identified an example in her life, stating: "Irritable, ill-tempered, cocky, rude... that's you!" Responding "what are you doing with me then?" Gorka dramatically departed the studio.
An unfazed Gemma simply continued, noting that all the expressions reflected Spain's culture and that Spanish people must communicate more directly than Britons. Having made his way back, Gorka offered one last lesson, revealing that calling someone a "Chorizo," or sausage, meant they were prone to stealing.
Child-Free Break Goes Wrong
Gemma recently put her Spanish abilities into practice during a child-free break with Gorka. Instead of a night of romance, Gemma said Gorka got an "exorcism," as she spent the entire night "projectile vomiting." The pair had secured a rare escape without their two young children, Mia and Thiago, who are six and two respectively.
"I got ill, of course I did, I get ill whenever I go away," Gemma said, acknowledging her own fault: "It was literally my own fault. There's nothing I can say other than I was a greedy, indulgent pig." She claimed over-indulgence sparked a significant stomach upset.
"That's why there's no child number three," Gorka complained. "I think she does it on purpose... I was getting ready – shave that bush and everything for the night." In reply to Gorka's allegation that she had "pretended" to be unwell, Gemma clarified that at the restaurant she had ordered somewhat recklessly. Gorka highlighted that Gemma had loaded up on carbohydrates and not ordered any protein. "Normally at home, I prioritise my protein, my fibre, my fat. I'm good," Gemma insisted.
