Gary Waddell dead: Australian actor dies at 74 after dementia

Australian actor Gary Waddell has died at the age of 74 following a battle with dementia. His death was announced by his management, Sophie Jermyn Management, which paid tribute to the performer who was a fixture of the Australian film and TV industry for more than five decades.

Management Pays Tribute to 'One of a Kind' Actor

In a statement on Instagram, Sophie Jermyn Management wrote: "Sadly our wonderful client, Gary Waddell, passed away peacefully this week after living with dementia over the last few years. Gary was one of a kind, a true artist in every sense of the word and his body of Australian work was so utterly impressive."

The statement added: "The SJM team send their love to Gary's family at this time. Thanks for everything, Gary - you will be missed. We've had a lot of fun over the years."

Career Highlights and Early Roles

Waddell's first film appearance came in 1975, when he played drug addict Lou in Pure S**t. He received an AFI award for his portrayal in the drama, which was initially banned before being released with an 'R' rating, provided the title was changed to Pure S.

He went on to appear in numerous TV shows, playing small but high-impact roles. This included roles in Australian soaps A Country Practice (1990) and Home and Away (2007-2009). He also appeared in E Street (1992), Stingers (1998-2004), Blue Heelers (1998), Water Rats (1996-2001), Bad Cop Bad Cop (2002), City Homicide (2011), and Upright (2020).

Film Work and Final Appearance

His film credits include The FJ Holden (1977), Chopper (2000), Dirty Deeds (2002), Black and White (2002), Gettin' Square (2003), Charlie's Country (2013), and The Stranger (2022). His final on-screen appearance was in the thriller The Survival of Kindness in 2022.

Despite his success, Waddell admitted he suffered from imposter syndrome throughout his career. He told The Guardian: "I actually thought for a long, long time – until around '86, '87 – that my career was one of the greatest con jobs I'd ever pulled off. I never thought I could act. I had no idea until an actor said to me – and he was a trained actor – that what I did on film was what most people go to school to learn."

Tributes From Colleagues and Fans

Tributes have flooded in for Waddell online, with one fan describing him as "one of the finest actors". Actor Christian Manon added: "Gary Waddell brought a genuine and very rare street level authenticity to the Australian screen."

Australian singer Lo Carmen said Waddell was "one-of-a-kind, heart-of-f***ing-gold dude", adding: "I don't know why on earth he wasn't cast in everything." Another fan wrote: "Vale Garry. Condolences to his family and to the SJM family. A talent a great person will be missed."
