Gary Barlow Says Circus Tour Won't Return Due to Physical Demands at 55
Gary Barlow: Circus Tour Won't Return at 55

Gary Barlow has revealed that Take That's Circus tour will not return, citing the physical toll of the performances at age 55. The 55-year-old singer made the announcement on Instagram after the final show of the band's latest UK and Ireland tour in Dublin over the weekend.

Tour Finale and Emotional Farewell

Take That, comprising Gary Barlow, Mark Owen (54), and Howard Donald (58), performed 17 Circus Live shows from May to July 2026, reviving their hugely popular 2009 tour of the same name. The original tour, which followed the release of their fifth album The Circus, broke records with over 600,000 tickets sold within five hours and over one million fans attending, generating over £40 million in profit. This year's tour was even bigger, featuring a 30-foot-tall mechanical elephant, an ascending hot air balloon, flamethrowers, and tightrope walkers.

In a reflective social media post, Barlow wrote: 'And another tour comes to a close. Somehow, this one feels a little different. With the other tours, it’s always comforting to know there will almost definitely be a next time. But I’m pretty sure this tour won’t return.' He added: 'I was 38 when we originally did this show, and I have to say it’s been a whole other challenge doing it as a 55-year-old. I just can’t see a way I could physically do this show again. So, it’s with an extremely heavy heart that I leave The Circus in my past.'

Fan Reactions and Howard Donald's Thanks

Fans flooded the comments with praise. @debs.macleod wrote: 'Absolutely loved it the first time round, and to then get to relive that a second time round was amazing. Thank you all for letting us take a second trip to the circus.' @katjaschwemmers said: 'You are in such good shape. Thank you for doing it all again.' @mrs_muir_1605 added that 'this tour will stay with us forever', while @jameshowardvoices called it 'magnificent'. Musical theatre actress Marisha Wallace praised: 'This show was unbelievable! I’m still talking about it.'

Earlier in the week, Howard Donald thanked fans for their support during the heatwave, writing on Instagram: 'Played to 200 thousand people over three dates at the London Stadium @westham in the blistering heat which was a challenge in itself! Undies were soaked and had to wrung out. Thank you for giving us the much needed energy and love to get us energised for the show. You are amazing London and we are amazed at the sheer scale of support after all these years! We will always do our best. The Circus will always be difficult to top and will be missed! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!'

New Music and Future Plans

Despite the end of the Circus tour, Barlow hinted at future projects: 'I got to run away with The Circus twice. Now I’m running towards our next exciting, brand new show.' The band released a new single, Sweet July, last week, and Barlow told The Sun's Bizarre column in 2025 that they were back in the studio as soon as the tour wrapped, aiming to release music more frequently. He said fans 'want stuff now' rather than waiting years between albums.

Take That also released a three-part Netflix documentary in 2026, charting their rise, fall, and reinvention, accompanied by the track You’re A Superstar. Their 10th studio album is scheduled for release later in 2026.

Band Line-Up and Robbie Williams' Future

Take That now performs as a trio following the departures of Jason Orange in 2014 and Robbie Williams. Jason participated in the original 2009 Circus shows but opted for a quieter life. Robbie continues a successful solo career, scoring his 16th number one album in January 2026 with Britpop, surpassing The Beatles' UK chart record. Despite past strained relationships, Robbie hasn't ruled out another Take That reunion, saying earlier this year: 'I’m sure we will ride again.'
