Former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has left people baffled after admitting he wouldn't recognise Sir Paul McCartney. The 39-year-old shared his limited knowledge of The Beatles during an appearance on TalkSPORT.
A viral clip shared on the radio station's social channels sees the retired footballer probed on whether he is a fan of the Fab Four. Agbonlahor said he wasn't aware of any of the band's back catalogue, stating: "If I heard some of the songs, I think I would do yeah. I don't know any off the top of my head."
Hey Jude revelation
Presenter Shebahn Aherne was confused by the admission, saying: "You don't know any Beatles songs off the top of your head? What about Hey Jude?" The classic song has been part of the soundtrack of the British summer as England fans serenade midfielder Jude Bellingham with the 1968 anthem. Realising this was The Beatles, Agbonlahor said: "That's a great song. The Beatles, eh?"
Shebahn then quizzed Agbonlahor on whether he preferred The Beatles or Oasis. The pundit was keen to broaden his Beatles horizons, saying: "You know what? I'd probably go and see The Beatles because I've heard so much Oasis. It will be nice to hear something different."
McCartney recognition
The Scottish presenter went on to ask who is bigger out of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher or legendary Beatle Sir Paul. However, the name of the 84-year-old icon temporarily escaped her as she laughed: "Dear lord. What's his name again?" Shebahn followed up to see if Agbonlahor would recognise Sir Paul if he walked past him in the street. The retired striker admitted: "No I would not, no. If I'm being honest."
The clip has since been widely shared on social media with the caption: "It's fair to say Gabby's knowledge on the Beatles is pretty limited!" People were baffled in the comments, urging Agbonlahor to fill the gap in his knowledge. Robert said: "The Beatles are the greatest band in human history." @thebeatlesrelated added: "Surely not!" Harry posted: "Is he having a laugh."
McCartney in Liverpool
Walton-born Sir Paul was back in his home city this week for the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts graduation ceremony. The legendary Beatle founded LIPA and returns each year for the ceremony. This week's event was particularly special as Sir Paul honoured fellow Scouser Stephen Graham with a LIPA Companionship. Adolescence star Stephen was one of five people recognised for his services to the creative industry at the M&S Bank Arena.
BAFTA-winning actor and writer Cathy Tyson, Paul Duhaney, artistic director of Africa Oyé, McFly founding member Tom Fletcher, and film producer Lynette Howell Taylor were also recognised. Ahead of the ceremony, Sir Paul was spotted by the Magical Mystery Tour in his car, posing for photos and FaceTiming his Beatles bandmate Sir Ringo Starr. The drummer posted on Instagram: "How about that for a Magical Mystery Tour in Liverpool? Peace and Love, Ringo."
