Former Paramount CEO Frank Mancuso Sr dies at 93

Frank G. Mancuso Sr., the former chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, has died at the age of 93. The studio executive passed away on Thursday, 1 October at his home in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer, with his family confirming the news in an official statement.

Career from theatre usher to studio chief

Born in Buffalo, New York, on July 25, 1933, Frank enjoyed a prolific career in the film industry. He started out as a theatre usher before joining Paramount Pictures in 1962, where he worked his way up the corporate ladder. Beginning as a film buyer, he ascended to chairman and CEO in 1984.

During his seven years in the role, Frank oversaw the release of major hits including Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Beverly Hills Cop II, The Untouchables, Ghost, and Fatal Attraction. After leaving the company in 1991, he joined MGM in 1993, where he served as CEO for six years before retiring in 1999.

Tributes from Hollywood stars

Following the news of his death, tributes have poured in from across Hollywood. Andy Garcia, star of The Godfather Part III, which was also overseen by the exec, said: "When God created Frank Mancuso Sr., he broke the mould. This is not just a saying but the absolute truth. Mr Mancuso will forever be a beacon of class in our industry, the greatest example of warmth, integrity, and generosity. I had the blessing of his friendship, support, and guidance. I will miss him deeply and will continue to be inspired by his example. Rest in peace, 'Pops.'"

Lost actor Jeff Fahey wrote, "Rest in peace, my friend, Frank Mancuso Sr." Musician Frank Stallone, younger brother of Sylvester Stallone, also penned a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. "We lost last week one of the finest gentlemen I ever knew," he began. "Frank was the president of Paramount Pictures during the Staying Alive era. He was loved and admired by many people for his faith, his devotion to his wife, Faye, and their almost 70-year marriage and their children. Family always came first. I spent many a holiday season at their wonderful home filled with warmth and love. He will be missed by many for his warmth and sage advice, but heaven has received a wonderful gift."
