Hope Street Star's Fundraiser Approaches £40,000 Milestone for Young Family
A GoFundMe campaign established for the family of actor Finnian Garbutt has achieved a significant financial milestone, nearing £40,000 in donations. The 28-year-old performer, renowned for his role as PC Ryan Power on the BBC series Hope Street, is currently receiving end-of-life care following a devastating diagnosis of Stage Three skin cancer that has aggressively spread to his neck and other areas.
Family Launches Appeal Amid Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Earlier this month, Garbutt publicly disclosed that he had entered the "last stages" of life, prompting his family to initiate the fundraising effort. The campaign aims to provide crucial support for his wife, Louise, whom he married just six months ago, and their one-year-old daughter, Saoirse, who celebrated her first birthday shortly before this announcement.
The family issued a poignant statement, explaining: "Sadly, with the cancer spreading rapidly, we now have to cherish each day we have left with him." The GoFundMe page, organized by Finnian and Luke Garbutt, has set a target of £50,000, with contributions steadily climbing toward the £40,000 mark as of recent updates.
Funds to Secure Future for Wife and Daughter
The raised money is intended to assist Louise in taking necessary time away from work to grieve and process this immense loss. Additionally, it will help cover essential household expenses, including mortgage payments, while setting aside resources for Saoirse's future education and upbringing costs. The family emphasizes that any unforeseen expenses arising from this difficult period will also be addressed through these donations.
In a heartfelt Instagram post shared on Wednesday, Finnian expressed his gratitude: "Thank you everyone for the outpouring of support these last few days. I cannot believe how many people across the world have reached out and offered beautiful encouragement in this really difficult time."
He continued, clarifying his intentions: "I am not posting this for sympathy and do not want anyone to donate if they cannot afford to. All I want is my wife and little baby to have the life they deserve and I wanted to be the one that provided that, which now is unfortunately no longer possible."
Actor's Cancer Journey and Recent Update
Finnian's health struggles began four years ago when he discovered a lump behind his ear, initially mistaking it for an ingrown hair. After his barber noted significant growth, medical investigations led to a shocking diagnosis. He underwent an extensive 12-hour surgery to remove 75 lymph nodes from his face and neck, marking the start of a grueling battle against the disease.
Last week, he shared a devastating update on social media: "Over the last month or so I've been having quite a bit of pain in my back and hip. My cancer team admitted me the other day for observations and to do a few scans. Unfortunately the scans have shown that the cancer has progressed rapidly in my body and I am now entering the last stages of life."
Despite the prognosis, Finnian reflected on positive achievements since his diagnosis, including:
- Appearing in 30 episodes of a television show
- Securing a lead role in an upcoming film
- Purchasing his own home
- Marrying his best friend
- Becoming a father to a daughter who "never fails to make me smile"
He concluded his message with a request for connection: "If anyone wants to meet up for a pint, coffee or general bit of craic please reach out and we can try to make it work."
Coming to Terms with a Young Death
In previous interviews, Finnian described the surreal moment doctors informed him of his terminal condition, saying it felt "almost as if they accidentally had diagnosed me with cancer and were treating me by mistake." He later accepted the harsh reality that he would "die young" due to the cancer's relentless spread.
The GoFundMe campaign continues to attract support from well-wishers globally, offering a tangible means to assist his family during this profoundly challenging time. Finnian's story has resonated widely, highlighting both the fragility of life and the power of community solidarity in the face of adversity.
