Fans Cringe as Commentator Shouts 'Siu' After Ronaldo Goal

World Cup fans were left cringing after commentator Darren Fletcher reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo's goal on live television by shouting 'Siu'. The moment occurred during Portugal's 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the NRG Stadium in Houston, where Ronaldo scored twice.

Ronaldo Ends Drought with Historic Goal

Ronaldo, 41, finally announced himself at the tournament by scoring two goals against Uzbekistan on Tuesday. The Portugal legend had come under fire for his performance in their opener against DR Congo, but finally managed to end a ten-game scoring drought at major international tournaments stretching back to November 2022.

His first goal against Uzbekistan, which came in the sixth minute, was also significant as it made the former Manchester United star the first player to ever score at six World Cups.

Fletcher's Unusual Commentary

Ronaldo celebrated emphatically, thrilling the crowd inside the NRG Stadium by performing his trademark 'Siu' celebration, which 68,000 fans inside joined in with. Also caught up in the moment was TNT Sports commentator Fletcher, who was working for Fox Sports on this occasion.

The forward had wheeled away after his goal, having pulled off a clinical first-time strike after cleverly escaping his markers in typical fashion. 'Fletch', meanwhile, was heard saying: "Relief, aggression, delight…" He then somewhat bizarrely let out a huge "SIU" himself as Ronaldo finished his well-known jumping celebration, before adding: "CR7 lights up Houston, he's up and running."

Fan Reactions

But listeners and fans who saw the clip alongside Fletcher's commentary online were left in disbelief - and not for the right reasons. One stunned fan said: "Went to look for this and actually, can I just shock you, I think VPNs should be banned now having watched this."

Another fumed: "World Cup is over. Shame," while a third vented: "The game's gone." Others chimed in with: "Never, ever go full Mark Goldbridge," and: "Of course he's the commentator who's done it."

Match Outcome and Ronaldo's Response

The match finished 5-0 in favour of Portugal, though the 2016 European champions still trail Colombia in their group. Ronaldo scored again just before half-time, but could have easily scored three more.

Addressing those who had questioned why Roberto Martinez was still relying on him so heavily, given his age, after the first game, he yelled "I'm back! I'm back!" down a television camera lens.
