A divorced man is considering reuniting with his ex-wife after she asked him to try again. They split a few years ago, and she quickly had a child with another man, but that relationship ended. They have since met for dinners, coffee dates, and walks in the park with her son.
He says the reconnection has been nice, especially as he hasn't had a serious relationship since the marriage ended. He enjoys her flirting. However, when she asked him directly how he'd feel about trying again, he laughed it off as a bad idea. Now he's wondering if it might not be so weird after all.
Coleen's Advice
Coleen suggests they talk more before jumping back in. She recommends discussing the baby and his father, and why she thinks things would be different this time. She also warns that the ex-wife might be seeking familiarity and stability after her breakup.
There's no rush, Coleen says. Keep meeting up and date as if they've never been married. Parenting can be hard on relationships, so he should ask himself if he's willing to take that on and whether she might walk out again during a rough patch.
If he has doubts, trust his gut. Perhaps he misses the familiarity rather than his ex. If serious, consider couples counselling.
Words of Wisdom
Coleen advises: 'Give yourself more credit for trying. You’re allowed to be a work in progress. The important thing is to keep showing up the way you are and being consistent. It will pay off.'
