Ewan McGregor has opened up about the harrowing motorcycle accident that nearly claimed the life of his friend and co-star Charlie Boorman, describing it as a 'wakeup call' that reignited their friendship.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, McGregor explained that the pair had drifted apart due to living in different countries and work commitments. However, Boorman's crash in 2016 prompted McGregor to reassess their relationship. 'It was a close call for him, and I realised how important he was in my life,' he said.
Boorman's accident occurred in Portugal when he collided with a wall while trying to avoid a car that had pulled out without seeing him. He suffered two broken legs and spent time in a wheelchair during his recovery. Reflecting on the experience, Boorman told The Irish News that being in a wheelchair was 'debilitating' and that people often spoke to his wife instead of him, as if he were not present.
Now fully recovered, Boorman has one leg 1cm shorter than the other due to surgeries. Despite initial wobbliness, he was determined to get back on a motorcycle. 'I was really desperate to get back on the motorbike again, even after my second break. So I just did it,' he said.
