With budget cuts affecting the whole of the BBC, 2026 has seen some iconic shows taken off air completely. £80million worth of cuts from TV, radio and news was announced earlier this year, with shows like BBC Breakfast being reduced from September and other programmes, like The World Tonight, being axed for good.
The Claudia Winkleman Show
Claudia Winkleman announced she was stepping down from her chat show after just one series, admitting she was too nervous to enjoy it. It has not been confirmed whether someone will replace her or not, but The Claudia Winkleman Show as it stands will not be renewed for another series.
Doctor Who Christmas special
After it was announced last year that Doctor Who fans could expect a Christmas special in 2026, the BBC later backtracked on that decision and cancelled the planned episode. The last series finished in May 2025, when Ncuti Gatwa left the role of Doctor and regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously played Rose Tyler. With Russell T. Davies leaving as writer, the future of Doctor Who is currently uncertain.
Football Focus
In April, it was announced that Football Focus had been axed after 52 years on air, with the final episode airing on May 24th. BBC Sport said: "Changing audience behaviours mean fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways and it is appropriate to respond to this as difficult decisions are made around how the licence fee is spent."
Winterwatch
Beloved nature series Winterwatch was axed in July 2026, after more than a decade on screens. Instead, it will be replaced by weekly video podcast Naturewatch, which will cover all four seasons – though Springwatch will continue to air next year. A statement said: "The BBC is committed to celebrating British nature across all our platforms, and we hope this new series will encourage audiences to fall in love with the natural world around them. By expanding the Watches brand we are making the BBC’s brilliant Natural History content even more accessible."
Virdee
Crime drama fans were left devastated earlier this year when the BBC announced it had axed thriller series Virdee – despite a positive reception from fans. Starring Game of Thrones legend Staz Nair, it followed a Bradford detective as he pursued a killer targeting members of the local Asian community. The show averaged 3.3million viewers.
