Monty Python star Eric Idle has released a devastating statement following the death of his friend, Springwatch presenter Bill Oddie, at the age of 85. In a message shared on X, Idle expressed his sadness, writing: “I’m very sad Bill Oddie has gone. He was sick for some time and I wrote to him.”
Decades of Friendship Remembered
Idle recalled their long history, noting that Oddie auditioned him for The Pembroke Revue in 1963 and that he stepped into Oddie’s roles for the Edinburgh Festival when the Cambridge Footlights went to the West End. “We watched England win the World Cup together at Wembley in ’66. He was a very fine songwriter and I learned a lot from him. He came to France and is in my book. We even had Chelsea season tickets together. I miss him,” Idle wrote.

Supporters flocked to comfort Idle, with one fan recalling meeting Oddie on a trip to Lundy Island and chatting about puffins and seals. Another wrote: “Sorry that you lost such a longstanding friend.” A third added: “RIP Bill, hope you knew how much you were loved.”
Agent Announces Death
Bill Oddie’s agent, David Foster, confirmed the news, describing him as “the country’s best-loved birder.” Foster said Oddie was a multi-talented celebrity – wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, songwriter, musician and conservationist – but valued protecting the environment over fame. “He taught us the wonder of it. He protested, lobbied and campaigned for it. He led the way... such a massive contribution to conservation will never be forgotten,” Foster stated. He added that it was an honour to represent Oddie and that he will miss him terribly. Foster asked for privacy for Oddie’s wife, Laura, and daughters Bonnie, Kate and Rosie.
