Jason Hoganson, the former actor who appeared in the 1987 cult film Empire State, died from natural causes and drug use, a coroner has ruled. The 55-year-old was found dead at his home on 4 April. A post-mortem examination attributed his death to bronco-pneumonia, with drug addiction as a significant contributing factor.
Early Release and Further Offence
Hoganson was among hundreds of inmates released early from prison in September 2024 to reduce overcrowding. He had served half of an 18-month sentence for assaulting his ex-partner and breaching a restraining order. The day after his release, he was arrested again after visiting his ex-partner's flat in Newcastle's West End and slapping her.
Cause of Death Confirmed
Newcastle Coroner's Court heard that Hoganson had a long history of alcohol and drug abuse. He was homeless and had a key worker for rough sleepers, who described his engagement with services as 'erratic'. Coroner Georgina Nolan delivered a narrative verdict, stating that Mr Hoganson died due to natural causes and drug use. She offered condolences to his family and friends.
