Atkins, who has been on the ITV soap since 2000, had only kind words for Harker. She said: “I can’t big this woman up enough. I adore her; she is so gorgeous in every way. She’s such a team player and that’s what she brought every day.”

The actress added: “Just a delight to work with, we were serious when we needed to be serious and then when we needed to switch off from it because of the nature of it, we would have a giggle together as friends.”

Plot details and exit

Dr Todd debuted last year and initially made life difficult for medical student Jacob Sugden, gaslighting him. She then turned her attention to Charity, blackmailing her over the true parentage of Leyla Sugden before sexually assaulting her. The sinister doctor later left the village for a new job in Sheffield, but a flashforward indicated she will be murdered. The identity of the killer remains unknown.

Atkins continued: “I hope to keep in touch with her. Well we text each other from time to time but what an incredible actress. Just wow, no one could have played it as well.”

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
