Emmerdale fans are convinced that they know who killed Dr Caitlin Todd as her reign of terror came to an end - but they're not convinced it was Mackenzie Boyd. Viewers have taken to social media to suggest that newcomer Serena Sugden, played by Casey Al-Shaqsy, may be the true culprit behind the surgeon's death.
Dr Todd's Deadly Arrival and Reign of Terror
Ever since Dr Todd first arrived in the Dales, it didn't take long for the well-respected surgeon to cause some trouble. After announcing herself as a mentor for trainee doctor Jacob Sugden, she soon ridiculed and bullied him while abusing her position of power. It went on for months before Jacob made the brave decision to report her to HR. However, he soon retracted his statement after Charity Dingle encouraged him to do so. Little did he know, it was all so Charity could stop Todd from exposing the secret that Sarah and Jacob's surrogate baby was actually Charity and Ross Barton's from a one-night stand.
As Dr Todd left her role at Hotten General Hospital, and ready to move to Sheffield, she focused all of her efforts on Charity and blackmailed her for every single penny she had left. Things soon escalated when Todd went on to kiss a drunken Charity, who swiftly rejected her before falling asleep on the sofa, thinking that Todd was about to leave. Noticing she'd finished a bottle of wine, Dr Todd hovered over Charity and sneered: "Wake up. Drunk, disgusting w****! One too many? Bad, bad girl. You should know better than to lose control." It was then that the horrific assault aired as she could be heard unzipping Charity's trousers before she awoke and realised what was happening. Although she was reported to the police, they didn't have enough evidence to keep her in, and soon, Todd was off to Sheffield to start her new role.
Charity Confides in Mack and Serena Arrives
However, in recent episodes of the ITV soap, Charity decided to tell her partner, Mackenzie Boyd, the truth about everything from her one-night stand with Ross, which saw her fall pregnant with baby Leyla, and eventually confided in him about the assault and blackmail. While both Mack and newcomer Serena Sugden encouraged Charity to report the blackmail to the police, she was told that they would have to treat the cases separately. As Mack spiralled over the truth, he was encouraged by Kev Townsend to get revenge, and he made his way to Sheffield to confront Dr Todd.
Of course, she denied that it wasn't consensual before asking him about Leyla, which sent him into a rage. Calling security on him, Dr Todd later told Mack there's no way the jury would believe Charity, and she would never get convicted. It was then, right at the end of Wednesday's (July 1) episode, that viewers saw Dr Todd lying on the floor in a pool of blood, looking like someone had killed the villain.
Fans Point Finger at Serena Sugden
With viewers desperate to figure out who could have killed Todd, it appears as though the ITV soap is hoping to make poor Mack look guilty of the deed. However, some are convinced that newcomer Serena Sugden is responsible. Serena, played by Casey Al-Shaqsy, arrived unexpectedly in the Dales last month. She surprised fans and Dales residents by announcing that she was a member of the legendary Sugden family.
We were first introduced to Serena after she found Charity in turmoil at a lake after the latter had been assaulted by Dr Todd. Since then, Serena has been asking plenty of questions about John Sugden, raising suspicion amongst those who knew him. While it's still unclear exactly what motive Serena has, some viewers are convinced already that she could be the killer. On X (formerly known as Twitter), @mitchelld199 wrote: "Why do I get the feeling it's Serena that's gonna kill Dr Todd." @carlasmissus agreed: "HATEEEEE that they’ve just killed todd off but would also like to offer an initial theory that serena kills her," as @swarlajemily replied: "omg I thought that too".
Another user @creativesoul5 penned: "It would be crazy if Serena was the one who killed Dr. Todd. Or is just a coincidence she’s killed after Serena appears." as @bearlyawakelion suggested: "So let’s just assume the arrival of the never before mentioned Sugden cousin, Serena, is because she’s gonna get revenge for John Or maybe she’s linked to Dr Todd Yeah. Both It is Emmerdale after all!"
