Ellie Goulding has revealed that her environmental campaigning has negatively impacted her music career, claiming she loses thousands of followers every time she posts about climate change. The singer, who serves as a UN environment ambassador, admitted she feared speaking out would jeopardise her job in the industry.
Speaking on the So Hot Right Now podcast, Goulding said: 'I genuinely thought that the activism would jeopardise my job, and I believe it has. Every time I post anything about climate change, I lose at least a thousand followers.' She added that fans often react with hostility, telling her to stop preaching or denying climate change altogether.
The 37-year-old star, who has sold 15 million albums worldwide, acknowledged that many artists avoid speaking out due to similar fears. 'I think that's why there is a lack of artists speaking out about it, because they're just terrified for their job,' she explained.
Despite the backlash, Goulding says she has developed a thicker skin over time. 'I've had trolls for as long as I can remember... I find it genuinely funny now,' she said, adding that even some fans have criticised her recent music. Her response: 'Well, that's done now.'
