The four-part true crime documentary series The Cult of NatureBoy has debuted on Disney+, exploring the disturbing story of Eligio Bishop, also known as NatureBoy, and his cult Carbon Nation. Bishop, now 43, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole plus an additional 10 years at Macon State Prison in Macon County, Georgia.
What Did Eligio Bishop Do?
Bishop founded Carbon Nation in 2016, a self-described 'Black Utopia' that began as an alternative lifestyle in the tropics but devolved into a sex cult marked by violence, manipulation, and coercion. He used social media to attract young Black creatives, encouraging them to leave the United States and join him in remote locations across Latin America and North America. Bishop presented himself as a spiritual leader and claimed to be a god, enforcing nudism, a strict vegan diet, and cutting off contact with families. He subjected followers to physical and sexual assault.
In March 2022, Bishop shared a video of himself assaulting former follower Jenaé Newell, leading to his arrest. He was charged with rape, false imprisonment, and revenge porn, and was convicted on all counts.
Where Is Eligio Bishop Now?
Bishop is currently imprisoned at Macon State Prison in Macon County, Georgia, serving a life sentence without parole. His 2024 trial concluded with the conviction, ending his reign over Carbon Nation.

The documentary, released on July 15, 2026, on Disney+ via the Hulu section, traces Bishop's rise from a troubled childhood to cult leader. Born in Harlem in 1982, Bishop experienced abuse and racism in foster care and juvenile detention. He later turned to stripping and sex work before launching the YouTube channel NatureboyTV in 2015, where he shared content on racial injustice and the environment, attracting followers to his vision of a 'Black utopia'.
The series is a must-watch for true crime fans, offering a shocking look into the manipulation and violence behind the seemingly idyllic community.
