Musharaf Asghar, known to millions as Mushy from the Channel 4 documentary series Educating Yorkshire, has married in Pakistan. The 25-year-old, who captured hearts in 2013 when he overcame his stammer with help from his English teacher Mr Burton, tied the knot in a traditional ceremony.
Asghar, who recently graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, had previously joked about being 'in hiding' from his family who wanted him to settle down. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he said: 'Being brown and Asian, I think we’ve got this sort of checklist which isn’t really ours but is our parents’. The first thing is to go to uni and get some type of education. That [settling down] is the final draw at the moment.'
The TV star now works as a keynote speaker and journalist in the Kirklees area, where Educating Yorkshire was filmed. He credits his teachers for his success, saying: 'Without the support that I got from every teacher it would have been extremely difficult... Teachers can honestly change a young person's life in ways that they never ever thought they possibly could.'
Asghar's wedding in Pakistan marks a new chapter for the former student, who once feared he would never attend university. He said: 'I actually never thought I would get into uni. Even the thought of going to uni in the first place was something I'd never really thought about.'
