Jackie Ashley, wife of broadcaster Andrew Marr, has spoken out about the challenges of caring for him after he suffered a serious stroke in January. Marr, then 53, was fit and active before the stroke left him half-paralysed. Ashley, who became his full-time carer, described the experience as exhausting and monotonous, with daily routines taking twice as long.
She praised the NHS for saving her husband's life and providing excellent hospital care, but criticised the lack of support after discharge. Daily intensive physiotherapy was replaced by weekly visits, which she called a false economy given that better rehabilitation could help patients return to work.
Returning to Westminster, Ashley expressed frustration at political mudslinging over NHS failings, arguing that MPs should work together on priorities. She also criticised the nastiness of online debate, citing death threats against feminist Caroline Criado-Perez as an example of misogyny on Twitter.
Despite the difficulties, Ashley noted that suffering a serious illness reveals the better side of human nature. She emphasised that carers everywhere need support and breaks, and that her own experience has given her a new perspective on life.
