EastEnders viewers were left emotional during the Monday, June 22 episode as fan-favourite Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) made an unexpected return, two years after her exit from the BBC soap. The brief appearance occurred via a phone call to Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams), who was contemplating financial help from Gray Atkins' grandmother, Sheila (Sheila Ruskin).
Karen's warning to Chelsea
In the episode, Chelsea tried to ring Karen after Sheila offered to help her son Jordan financially. Karen's voice was first heard on voicemail, and later she returned the call while Raymond Fox (Michael Jose Pomares Calixte) and Jordan were playing a game. Karen warned Chelsea: "Listen, I would give that Sheila a very wide berth, all right? She was always close to Gray. Could do no wrong in her eyes. She tried getting in touch with Mack and Mia a few times, but as far as I'm concerned, inviting her into your life is the same as inviting Gray."
Fans react to the return
Soap fans were delighted by Karen's brief return, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express their joy. One user wrote: "It was really lovely to hear Karen's voice again today and I'd love a Karen & Mitch return for a bit at least or a cameo, I hated that they left." Another added: "Wait Karen on the phone," alongside tearful emojis. A third fan, sharing a screenshot of Lorraine Stanley's name in the credits, said: "This in 2026 and it only being temporary is tragic to me. Lorraine Stanley's departure from the show was not one of Clenshaw's best decisions and Ben Wadey has the chance to fix it." Some viewers predicted a more permanent return, with one commenting: "They are definitely bringing Karen back at some point in the story. She'll possibly come back and have a standoff with Sheila and this is where Chelsea finds out the truth about her being close to Gray."
Karen's history on the Square
Karen Taylor originally left Walford in December 2023 after seven years on the Square, alongside her partner Mitch Baker (Roger Griffiths), their grandchildren Mack and Mia Atkins, and Mitch's daughter Bailey Baker. After moving to Spain, Karen returned for several guest appearances before departing for good in June 2024. Her return now coincides with the impending return of her evil former son-in-law, Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith).
Other storylines in the episode
The episode also featured Chelsea making a big decision after her son Jordan returned home, and tensions rising between Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) and Bea Pollard (Ronni Ancona) after Bea accused Billy of trying to seduce her. EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am.
