Eamonn Holmes Denies Falling Asleep on GB News, Speaks on Health Struggles
Eamonn Holmes Denies Sleeping on Air, Details Health Battle

Veteran broadcaster Eamonn Holmes has firmly dismissed allegations that he was 'falling asleep' during a live broadcast on GB News earlier this month. The 66-year-old presenter, who vanished from the breakfast TV programme shortly after viewers expressed concern over his 'slurred speech and being caught napping', addressed the controversy directly at an event in London.

Setting the Record Straight on the GB News Incident

During an appearance at Hayley Palmer's 'An Audience With...' event held at London's Hippodrome Casino on Wednesday, Holmes clarified the situation. According to reports from The Mirror, he stated, 'I was just looking down at my mic pack to see why it was not working, as we don't have floor managers or camera operators.' He added dismissively, 'Apparently I was sleeping? Whatever!'

The incident occurred while Holmes was co-hosting his show with Ellie Costello, where he appeared to nod off in his chair and fidget with his microphone and mobile phone. Holmes insisted this was merely him troubleshooting equipment issues, not dozing off on air.

Health Struggles and Industry Ageism

This controversy follows a 'horrendous' health update from Holmes, who has faced significant medical challenges in recent years. In 2016, he underwent a double hip replacement, but in 2021, he suffered three slipped discs and a dislocated pelvis. Major spinal surgery followed in 2022, compounding various other health issues over the past few years.

During a recent interview on Scott Wright’s podcast, Session7, Holmes opened up about his daily struggles, both professionally and personally. When asked about his future, he responded candidly, 'I don't know, society's ageist, I'm sick, I'm in a wheelchair, that's been horrendous to deal with for two years.'

The Challenges of Disability in Daily Life

Holmes, who is currently in a relationship with Katie Alexander, 43, elaborated on the difficulties he faces. 'Certainly, I don't think TV wants to know you. I can't get up. I need help getting out of this chair. I have to have carers throughout the day,' he explained. However, he emphasised his professional capabilities, saying, 'But once I'm sitting down, I can do everything. I understand my job, I understand what I'm supposed to do. But I understand it's tough for people to deal with you.'

He further highlighted societal barriers for disabled individuals, noting, 'When you're disabled, it's unbelievable how society... whether it's a theatre, a restaurant or a cinema.' He specifically criticised cinema accessibility, stating, 'The cinema never ceases to amaze me. I love the cinema, but when you go to the cinema and you're disabled, you get two choices: you're either at the very, very, very back and beyond of the cinema, or you're right at the very front.'

A Storied Career in Television

Eamonn Holmes has been a prominent figure in the television and entertainment industry for decades. His extensive presenting portfolio includes shows such as GMTV, Open Air, Jet Set, TV Scrabble, and How Do They Do That? He is perhaps best known for co-presenting This Morning alongside his ex-wife Ruth Langsford from 2006 to 2021. The couple announced their separation in 2024 after 14 years of marriage, marking a significant personal change alongside his health battles.

Despite these challenges, Holmes remains active in media, continuing to share his experiences and perspectives while navigating the complexities of disability and ageism in the fast-paced world of broadcast journalism.
