Celebrities and Controversial Guest Spotted

Other notable attendees included former England football captain Sir David Beckham, former Great British Bake Off judge Dame Mary Berry, and ex-Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly. However, the presence of Lady Susan Hussey, 87, drew particular attention. She was seen sitting in a row in front of Tess Daly and Gayle Lawton, dressed in black with a white blazer and burgundy sunglasses.

Lady Susan Hussey's Controversial Past

Lady Susan, the late Queen Elizabeth’s Lady of the Bedchamber and a godparent to Prince William, resigned in December 2022 following a racist incident at Buckingham Palace. In November 2022, Ngozi Fulani, founder of the charity Sistah Space, alleged that Lady Susan had asked her where she “really” came from during a reception. Ms. Fulani wrote on X: “Mixed feelings about yesterday's visit to Buckingham Palace. 10 minutes after arriving, a member of staff, Lady SH, approached me, moved my hair to see my name badge. The conversation below took place. The rest of the event is a blur.”

According to a transcript shared by Ms. Fulani, Lady Susan allegedly asked “what part of Africa” she was from and pressed her on her nationality, saying even after Ms. Fulani stated she was born in Britain: “No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?” The exchange was reportedly witnessed by Mandu Reid, leader of the Women's Equality Party, and Suzanne Jacob.

Buckingham Palace Response

Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying: “We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full details. In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes. In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect. All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.”
