Doctor Who fans have rallied to defend Billie Piper after the shock cancellation of the 2026 Christmas special and the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies. The BBC confirmed that the festive episode would not go ahead, and Davies announced his exit on social media, sparking backlash over Piper's inclusion in the series finale.
Fan Outrage Over Regeneration
In May 2025, Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, a move many fans now criticize. One user wrote: 'What I'm most angry with RTD about is the regeneration. If this was always the plan, either Fifteen shouldn't have regenerated or the ending should've been left open-ended.' Another questioned whether Piper's casting was a 'Hail Mary to keep Disney on board.'
BBC's Decision Explained
The BBC stated: 'After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, but in order to set the show up for future series, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show.'
Davies added on Instagram: 'It was GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show. You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who... but you'll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off.'
Future of the Show
The BBC plans to put Doctor Who out to competitive tender after its deal with Disney Plus ends. Fans remain divided, with many expressing sympathy for Piper. One fan said: 'If the show comes back it will be ignored. If it doesn't come back, God I feel bad for Billie Piper.'
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
