Disney Star Diagnosed with Cancer After Van Der Beek's Death

Former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano has publicly revealed a cancer diagnosis, sharing the emotional news in a tearful social media post. The 42-year-old actress, best known for her role in the hit series Even Stevens alongside Shia LaBeouf, disclosed that she tested positive for what she described as "stageable cancer" after being inspired to undergo health screenings following the tragic death of Dawson's Creek icon James Van Der Beek.

Van Der Beek's Legacy Inspires Health Action

James Van Der Beek, the beloved actor who passed away at age 48 from stage III colon cancer earlier this month, served as the catalyst for Romano's decision to pursue medical testing. The actress explained through tears that Van Der Beek's death prompted her to take her health more seriously, leading to the concerning diagnosis.

"I was able to meet James Van Der Beek a bunch," Romano shared emotionally. "His family is amazing, he was a pillar of our community in Texas. They were always raising money for the most amazing charities and... he's not with us any more, which is why I got this test."

Family History and Current Concerns

The actress revealed a significant family history of cancer, noting that both her parents battled the disease, with her mother surviving but her father ultimately succumbing. Her maternal grandmother also died from lung cancer, adding to Romano's heightened concern about her own health status.

Romano received her test results shortly before filming in Florida last December and is now preparing for a positron emission tomography (PET) scan scheduled for later this week. The Special Forces: World's Toughest Test contestant admitted to feeling "nervous and a bit scared" about the upcoming procedure and results.

Sharing for Awareness and Support

Despite initial hesitation about appearing "cringe," Romano decided to share her diagnosis publicly to encourage others to prioritize health screenings. "I decided it was my duty to share, so that people get out there and get screenings," she explained in her Instagram post.

The actress, who will celebrate her daughter Sophia's seventh birthday this Wednesday, expressed particular concern about her two young daughters, Isabella (9) and Sophia (nearly 7). "I'm sure people think I'm overreacting but I'm not because cancer's pretty serious and I have two little girls," she stated. "This is a very emotional post."

Support System and Treatment Outlook

Romano's husband, Brendan Rooney, immediately offered unwavering support following her announcement. "You got this my beautiful wife," he wrote in response to her post. "We will figure this out and destroy any problem that comes your way. I love you beyond words."

The We're Alive: Descendants star remains hopeful about her treatment prospects, expressing optimism that her cancer might be "something easy to treat." She has asked for positive energy from supporters as she navigates the diagnostic process and prepares for whatever treatment plan emerges from her upcoming PET scan results.

Romano's candid disclosure highlights the importance of regular health screenings, particularly for individuals with family histories of cancer. Her story serves as both a tribute to James Van Der Beek's legacy and a powerful reminder of cancer's indiscriminate nature, affecting even those who appear healthy and vibrant in the public eye.
