Strictly Come Dancing star Dianne Buswell has revealed the inspiration behind her baby son's unique name as she prepares for her big dancing return. The professional dancer, who won the BBC One dance contest back in 2024 with comedian Chris McCausland, welcomed her baby boy, Bowden, into the world back in March with her partner, YouTube star Joe Sugg.
How Bowden Got His Name
Speaking on the Hits Radio Breakfast show with Fleur East, Will Best and James Barr, Dianne was asked about her son and where the idea for his name came from. "We need to congratulate you, Dianne, on the birth of baby Bowden," Fleur started by saying as a beaming Dianne replied: "Thank you so much!"
"You call him Bowie, that's so cute! How is he?" Fleur asked as Dianne responded: "Oh my God, he's just so cute. I love him so much. Like, ridiculous amounts. Even this morning, just coming in, I've checked in too many times where Joe's probably turned his phone off. He's like, 'He's fine! He's alive! Leave me alone now.' But no, he's gorgeous. I love him, I love being a mum. It's just the best."
After saying Joe was 'made' to be a dad, she said of Bowden's name: "So actually, Joe used to live on 'Bowden Hill' when he was growing up and he said as a joke, 'Oh, we should name him Bowden!' And I said, 'I actually really like it!' So it stuck. It was meant to be a joke and I said, 'Oh I love that!' From very early on we were calling him Bowie and Bowden, and I just couldn't call him anything else!"
Family Life and Return to Dance
Their son's arrival came after the couple, who met on Strictly when they paired together for the 2018 series, announced in September last year, ahead of Dianne's return to the dancefloor, that she was pregnant with their first child before she went on to compete in the 2025 series. Since then, both Dianne and Joe have been seen sharing updates on their new life as a family of three, including sharing regular Instagram posts and vlogs on their respective YouTube channels.
Now, Dianne has been heard talking about her and Joe's new arrival as she joined her Strictly co-star Vito Coppola for interviews following the announcement of their new tour, Dianne & Vito: Back in Business. The tour marks her return to professional dancing after maternity leave.
